Nothing But 90s

I aim to update on a daily basis but it will dependent on how busy I am with other things.

Adverts. I love reminiscing over old adverts. One of my favourite set of adverts is the Barclaycard ones featuring Rowan Atkinson. Not really a fan of Rowan Atkinson's work but he just played the part so well in these adverts. I Can watch these on repeat!

Weather. I love weather and have been fascinated by it since i was a youngster. Growing up i always wanted to be a weatherman and i would always make a point of watching the daily forecast. Shouts to Michael Fish, Bill Giles, Ian McCaskill (r.i.p) John Kettley, Peter Cockroft, Suzanne Charlton & Rob McElwee for making the 90's weather forecasts a joy to watch. So on that note here is a weather forecast for this day twenty four years ago.

Throwback Thursday

Everyday here is a throwback day so no need to use the above title.

American Wrestling (WWF) was a big thing in the 90's and is still big business these days. Sadly most of the wrestlers I grew up with in the 90's are no longer with us but the bizarre storylines continue to be created in the now WWE.

It was a friend who lived a few doors down from me who initially got me into the WWF as he had Sky TV (a luxury back in 1991) and he would record various shows which I would borrow. I soon got to know who were the good guys and who were the bad guys and of course back then I thought it was all real! Even when I realized it was all just storylines and all matches were premeditated it didn't put me off. You were just drawn into certain wrestlers and how laughable some of the storylines were. They had two jobs, a professional sports person and an actor, both which they all played well.

I received my first video of a main event for my birthday in November 1991. Summerslam 89 where I discovered my favourite wrestler of all time Ravishing Rick Rude. He had the looks, the hair, the body, charisma and a classy theme when walking to the ring. His yelling over the microphone ("all you out of shape sweat hogs") always drew a laugh from me. Sadly he wasn't around in the WWF for long but his time there will always be remembered. R.I.P Rick

Peep the intro to Summerslam 89 (not 90's I know, but close enough)

Drinks. I have always been a lover of soft drinks since i was a young boy and thankfully i still have all my own teeth! And when Coca-Cola launched a new drink in early 1993 i was eager to try it. It went by the name of Tab Clear and it was a clear cola. There was a buzz round school when shops started to stock and at a trial price of 23p it flew off the shelves. No one really knew what it would taste like, would it taste like normal coke? or would it taste just plain weird? Even now its hard to describe what it really tasted like. But to sum it up you either loved it or loathed it. Personally i loved it and it was all i drank when it came to soft drinks.

Fast forward to 1994 and i was greeted with the sad news that it was being discontinued. Sales had been poor and marketing of the product didn't really work out how they had hoped so it was shelved. Pepsi had similar fate as they had launched a rival drink by the name of Crystal Pepsi again a clear cola but this was also shelved after a year. So clear cola was not what people wanted in the 90's. People have tried to start petitions for Coca-Cola to bring it back but it fell on deaf ears.

I managed to find an empty can being sold on ebay just to remind me of what could have been. Here is a picture of said can and others. Tab Clear i salute you.

Advert of the day

What a home computer this was! I finally persuaded my parents to buy me one for Christmas 1992 and i wasn't dissapointed. I spent most of Christmas Day and Boxing Day trying out new games and losing hours. Too many good games to mention but they will pop up in the blog at some point. Commodore i salute you.

Back to the music for my next post. Been awhile since i last visited. I always have plans to do a daily blog but with working and being a parent time is precious so lets see how long i can keep posting for this time!

Thursday evening's in the 90's you were usually only doing one thing, watching Top Of The Pops on BBC1. Even if you wasn't a big music fan it was probably still on in your household! I listen to certain tunes at certain times of the year (yeah strange i know) but each song will have some sort of memory attached to it from that time. So with that said here is the great KLF with one of there many 90's hits 3am eternal which reminds me of cold winter nights being at home in the warm and playing video games.

Let's talk Halloween. Over here in the UK it is now a big thing, shops line the aisles months before the 31st October, costumes are now next level and Halloween house parties are the trend. Lets rewind to the early nineties where things were a little bit different.

Shops literaly had a couple of shelves of Halloween tat to pick from. Costumes were at times hand made, a simple sheet with a couple of holes would suffice! and it was all about trick or treating. The buzz of getting back to your friends house and counting up how many sweets and chocolates we had collected was the highlight of the evening. The final time i went out trick or treating was a little different. I was fourteen years old (1993) and and a bit of a dick! Me and two mates decided to go out loaded with eggs, bangers and smoke bombs and cause havoc of the estate where they lived.

The houses we targeted were mainly people from school who we didn't like or just because we knew where they lived. Bangers and eggs were being launched left right and centre and throwing a smoke bomb onto a busy roundabout wasnt our cleverest move! I guess i look back now and laugh but it was very immature and we pissed alot of people off! To top it off while cycling on my way home i passed a house with a hose pipe attached to an outside tap but had no idea where it lead to so i just turned it on and cycled away quickly! What a dick!

Drinks in glass bottles? It just tastes nicer right? All the way back from drinking panda pops in the mid 80's to having Coke from a glass bottle with a straw in the pub it just felt right. It was colder, fizzier and looked sexier than a boring old plastic bottle with no character.

Same went for having your milk delivered. The clanking of the glass bottles being unloaded from the milk float and then being placed on your doorstep was a sound to behold. Lovely stuff.
